Qi gong is a practice of Chinese origin, originating in Taoism, whose aim is the mastery of qi, the vital breath. The word gong in Mandarin means work, exercise, discipline. Qi gong encompasses a multitude of exercises, static and dynamic postures, designed to cultivate vital energy, master breathing and relaxation, and control the circulation of qi, or vital energy, throughout the body.
Practised daily, qi gong helps to cultivate health and longevity. It also helps control the mind and emotions. There are different forms of qi gong: martial, meditative, medical….
Qi gong most often consists of a series of movements practiced slowly and harmoniously, combining :
- breathing
- visualization
- listening to the body
- relaxation
There is also medical qi gong, which is practiced by a Chinese doctor on a patient to treat him or her. See video.
