Our immune system is the best protection
At a time when there is widespread panic about Covid-19, it is urgent to remember the importance of our immune system. Under the same epidemic conditions, people with strong immune systems are more resistant to viruses. Those with weak immune systems are more vulnerable.
This immunity depends on the quality and quantity of our vital energy, according to TCM.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is often known as a preventive medicine. Its philosophy is to keep the individual in good health to prevent him from getting sick. Therefore, TCM will correct energy imbalances so that the body can do its natural job of preserving health.
Indeed, a well maintained body has a good immunity. In Chinese medicine, it is the defensive energy: the Wei qi, which is our first protection against external aggressions, including viruses. It acts like a second skin. The Wei qi is elaborated under the control of the Kidneys in connection with the Lungs. It is therefore essential that these organs are strong.
It is especially important to ensure that the Kidneys are functioning well, as they contribute to the proper functioning of the Lungs. So if the Kidneys are weakened, the defensive energy or Wei Qi will also be weakened.
A healthy lifestyle
To maintain a good immunity, it is essential to take care of a balanced lifestyle. One will take care to have :
- A balanced and healthy diet,
- A restful sleep,
- A sporting practice,
- A wide and conscious breathing,
- Relaxing practices: meditation, yoga…,
- Spending time in nature;
The regular practice of Qi Gong (30′ per day minimum) allows to feed the vital energy. It allows to calm the mind (Shen), to circulate the energy (qi), and finally to nourish the Jin (vital energy). Focused on ample breathing and relaxation, Qi Gong has a powerful effect on the mind and body.
For people suffering from sleep disorders, emotional instability, or chronic anxiety, it is recommended to consult a practitioner of Chinese medicine. Acupuncture as well as pharmacopoeia will allow them to find a physical and emotional balance, and thus to reinforce their vital energy. Thus their immunity will be reinforced.
Knowing how to keep serenity in times of crisis is the guarantee of a good immunity. This is why TCM has always advocated “Nourishing Life” by maintaining health through the principles of Yang Sheng. This is the best way to be always ready to face any external aggression, including viruses.

Sanitary measures that are harmful to health
In times of epidemics, public health policies should aim at strengthening the immunity of individuals. Unfortunately, all sanitary measures are contrary to this.
Wearing a mask restricts breathing and prevents proper oxygenation of the body.
The confinement prevents from enjoying the fresh air and the sun, source of vitamin D and known to strengthen immunity.
It makes it difficult to practice sports such as jogging or brisk walking, especially if you have to wear a mask outside!
Social distancing hinders the exchange of tenderness, the natural relationships of exchange between humans, like smiling. Yet harmonious human relations are essential to our general balance.
Finally, the deluge of anxiety-provoking information perpetually broadcast on television or in the media generates a climate of stress. Psychologists all confirm an upsurge in cases of anxiety and depression, especially among young people.
